Khilafat is Islamic regime under the control of a Khalifa and demanding strict observance of Shariyat laws. No other religion except Islam has any existence under such a rule and no holy book other than Quran is allowed. Those who aspire for an Islamic regime want all other religions to be eradicated. Only Islam should remain. If at all any religions remain in places under Khilafat rule, their followers just manage to exist as second class citizens without any rights or benefits. The sad plight of Hindu minority in Pakistan is one example of this.  For every Muslim there is an aim in life – To believe and propagate “Din”. Through this process others have to be brought into the hold of Islam. Individuals and organizations are working openly and covertly for islamization. Even any one speaking against Islam is being considered as a war against their religion. They desire to fight for their religion and become martyrs called “Shaheed.” These people believe that such martyrs eventually reach heaven after death.

Many religions have their origin in India. There were several such religions during the period of Shankaracharya. Once Shankaracharya undertook a national tour taking the holy light of Vedic culture into the midst of a generation blinded by religious fundamentalism, all the petty religious factions realized the ultimate truth and got evaporated in no time. Every sect got merged in the cultural mainstream of the nation. The fact that Semitic religions have no permanent existence and they will get eliminated from here by the avalanche brought in by time is proved by those religions which became extinct during Shankaracharya’s time. The Indian ethos or belief system called Hinduism can never be destroyed by time and it shines more and more as it moves forward. No need to say that Hinduism is not a religion but a way of life – a culture.

The Semitic religions through their evangelistic endeavors try to impress on others that their religion alone is supreme and all others are just hollow beliefs. Their aim is always to woo Hindus alone. Islam which was one of the last propagated religions of Semitic origin, after their arrival in India is actively engaged in converting Hindus to their religion with a view to augment their numbers. The Christians try vehemently to Christianize and Muslim to Islamize India. There is no doubt that if Hinduism is destroyed in India, our national spirit will be shattered and the nation itself will be no more. Even now news reports shocking to the global consciousness, about the wars fought by Islamic state terrorists to establish their supremacy over world nations including India are pouring out daily.

The Islamic State terrorists are aiming at a Khilafat regime. Khilafat is nothing but an Islamic state. These terrorists who claim to have established Islamic reign in various parts of Iraq and Syria are resorting to mass execution by mercilessly beheading, and gunning down “Kafirs” (Non –Muslims). The gory scenes of execution of Mr. David Hails, a British citizen, on Sept 14th, 2014 by propagators of Khilafat movement were released by the Islamic terrorists with great fanfare and self -amusement. David Hails was the press correspondent deputed to report the news about civil war being fought in Syria, for international media. The same terrorists had similarly mercilessly executed American Press reporters like James Folly, Stephen Dotgof and released their video footages. Several Islamic State terrorists were also killed in the civil war. There were several casualties on the opposite side also. The news about kidnapping several young girls for satisfying the carnal desires of the terrorists was heard by people all over the world with great horror and shock. What will be the ultimate result if Islamic  terrorists were to establish a Khilafat regime in the world is amply demonstrated by these gory incidents.

It is in the light of the above revelation that we have to introspect about the Moplah rebellion of 1921. This insurgency by the Muslims of Malabar was also aimed at establishment of a Khilafat. The Islamic intellectuals reiterate that Islam is a religion advocating peace and harmony and will never resort to any injustice or attacks on other believers. But when religious blindness enters the brains of a few Muslim fundamentalists all their evil deeds and persecution get accounted in the name of Islam. There is no doubt that majority of Muslims who follow the Islamic religion have remained peace loving and benevolent all through the ages. Such peace loving Muslims from all over the world have ridiculed and disapproved the aims and subversive actions of Islamic State terrorists. It is also quite noteworthy that the Indian Muslim clerics too have declared that the bloody path and terrible actions followed by the Islamic State terrorists are totally un- Islamic and cannot be approved of under any circumstances.

The communists interpret the insurgency as a revolt of the Muslim peasants against Hindu landlords and the Indian National Congress and Indian Union Muslim League construe it as a freedom movement. Historians who relax under the shelter and shade provided by various political parties wrote history to suit the interests of their masters which caused willful concealment of the truth behind the atrocities and organized genocide. Sri K. Madhavan Nair who has originally sown the seeds of Khilafat movement in Malabar has authored a comprehensive book on Moplah rebellion. But vested interests caused it to be shunned as a malicious and mean literary work. Kumaranasan’s poem “Duravstha” (Distress) was also written in the context of the rebellion. This also was classified as malicious and mean poetry. Even the book “Moplah rebellion- facts and fallacies” written in Malayalam has been included in that group.

Tens of thousands of Hindus were forcefully converted. Many were mercilessly beheaded. Several Hindu households were torched and completely scorched. Hindu women were subjected inhuman sexual assaults. Tens of thousands ran away leaving everything behind out of fear to escape from the lethal Muslim rioters. Several temples were desecrated and destroyed. This was the form in which the Moplah rebellion was organized and piloted which subsequently was interpreted as a peasant revolt and freedom struggle. While in the rest of India Khilafat movement was organized peacefully it was in Malabar alone that the same took such an ugly form. Declaring that the reign of Khilafat has been established, three self -styled Khalifas started ruling the areas where the organized Hindu massacres were staged. When the Chaliyar and Vakkallur rivers turned crimson from the blood oozed out of decapitated Hindu cadavers, national leaders expressed severe grief and sorrow out of the tragic developments. The national leaders of Indian National Congress and Khilafat opposed the organized human slaughter called Moplah rebellion. On 22nd of September 1921, Mahatma Gandhi, shocked by the cruelties caused by the movement wrote in “Young India.”

“The incidents that happened in Malabar are disturbing the minds of us who know well the atmosphere prevalent there now. Whenever I realized that our Moplah brothers had become insane, my heart bleeds. My heart pains when I hear that they killed officers. My pain has no end when I hear that they had looted Hindu houses and made hundreds of Hindu brothers and sisters homeless and foodless. My heart burns when I remember that Hindus were forcibly converted to Islam”

Several other national leaders also reacted to the shocking cruelties which severely pricked their conscience and shattered their human faculties. Let us see some of it.

Dr. Ambedkar in his book “Pakistan or Partition of India” said like this about the insurgency.

“The aim of Khilafat was to oust the British Government and establish Islamic reign in its place. But it has not been possible to guess the reasons for the atrocities committed on Hindus by the Muslims of Malabar in the name of Khilafat. The evil fate that befell on Hindus caused by the Muslims was terrible. Murders, forced conversions, pillage and demolition of temples, piercing with a sword the trunks of pregnant women, ill treatment of ladies and arson, including beastly and unabashed evil savagery were showered on Hindus by Muslims. This continued till the army reached the scene to reinstate the rule of law.”

Annie Besant, of British origin and who was the president of Indian National Congress and who worked shoulder to shoulder with Mahatma Gandhi for freedom of our nation, said.

“The Moplah insurgency in Malabar started after accumulating weapons for about three weeks. They believed in the rhetoric that the British rule has ended and they were free. They established a Khilafat reign. A King was crowned. They plundered and looted as much as they could. Those Hindus who resisted forced conversion to Islam were compelled to run away to save their lives. Over a lakh of people were rendered refugees after losing everything except the meager clothing they wore. Thousands of Muslims were also killed.

Annie Besant had written this in her book called “Future politics of India.”

Yakub Hassan Seth a leader of Khilafat movement who was arrested and punished at the commencement itself of Moplah Rebellion wrote in the Hindu newspaper on 13th September.

“Some illiterate and evil minded people who belonged to the Muslim community were brainwashed into forcing their Hindu neighbors who lived in peace and harmony with them to convert into Islam. I am sure that this will be ridiculed by the entire Muslim society as the meanest and most despicable among all atrocities committed by the rioters. Their thoughtless actions have brought in worst notoriety and ill fame to the religion itself. We have to seek pardon from those Hindus who were forcefully converted. I hereby do that on behalf of all Muslims. It is quite clear that the message of nonviolence given by the Khilafat committee and Ulemas has not percolated into the people who have resorted to violence and murder.”

On September 23, 1921 a statement given by prominent Muslims in Malayala Manorama reads like this.

A message to all Muslim brethren.

Hindus like Gandhiji and Muslims like Shoukath Ali and Muhammad Ali had ill advised us. Whatever is being done now and whatever has been done so far are totally against our “Din”(Religion) There is a grave danger in our Muslim brothers getting involved in these and we all- Makhdoom Thangal, the first among Kerala Muslims, Puthiyakath Bava Muslaiyar Thangal,Veliyankode Thattangarath Musaliyar, and Kavudiyammanakanakath Abdullakutty Musaliyar after having deliberated in an Alim’s conference at Ponnani on 24th july1921, have severed all our connections with the false and anarchist movement called Khilafat, Noncooperation, and freedom struggle etc. Murder, plundering, forced conversion, pillage of others property etc. are totally against our religion and hated by our prophet- Mohammed Nabi (the blessed)”

This statement was issued by about a thousand Muslims under the leadership of Ponnani Makhdum Thangal –Pazhayakath Mammikkutty Haji. It is evident from this that they were fully aware about the advance preparations made and sad consequences of the rebellion. The fact that the rebellion had not spread to Ponnani is itself the positive result of this realization. When the mutiny was creating havoc in other places, Manorama had published this with the sole intention of discouraging the propagators of violence by appealing to their true religious sensibilities.

The great poet Rabindranath Tagore issued a press statement like this.

“I had gone to Malabar immediately after the Malabar Moplah rebellion ended. I saw with my own eyes, 40 lakh Hindus living in abject fear of 10 lakh Muslims”

Freedom fighter and eminent journalist cum advocate Sri. C. Narayana Pillai in one of his texts wrote like this in 1973.

“The dismal failure of all attempts made by Mahatma Gandhi for the freedom and unity of the nation with Hindu Muslim amity was caused by the Moplah rebellion of Malabar in addition to paving the way for division of the nation. Discarding all advices and protesting voices from his coworkers and other highly placed political luminaries, Gandhiji included Khilafat in the action program of Congress with a mistaken notion that it will eventually lead to long lasting Hindu Muslim friendship. Inclusion of a sectionalist agenda like Khilafat in the Congress action plan was a grave blunder, which has since been acknowledged generally by all serious thinkers on the subject.”

An open statement made by national leaders of Indian National Congress when the Khilafat movement was in full swing also attracts our attention.

“Truth is more important than the amity between Hindus and Muslims in our Swaraj. Hence to Moulavi sahib with his followers and Mahatma Gandhi we speak. The atrocities committed by Muslims on Hindus are simply true. For a true follower of nonviolence and noncooperation the actions of Moplah insurgents cannot be approved of. What for they are to be congratulated?  For looting the Hindu houses? Or converting forcibly Hindus to Islam? For massacring innocent Hindu men, women and children?  For raping Hindu women? For desecrating Hindu temples and destroying them? Was it that those who committed these atrocities were sacrificing their lives for their religion?”

This joint statement was made by Sri. K Madhavan Nair, KPCC secretary, Sri. T V Muhammad, secretary Eranad taluk Khilafat committee, Sri.K.Karunakara Menon treasurer, KPCC etc.

What were staged in Malabar in 1921 were such terrible cruelties that shook the conscience of the entire world. Many correspondents of leading International newspapers arrived in Malabar and reported daily about the gory details of the atrocities.  This it self is indicative of the extent of cruelties the insurgents inflicted upon the Hindus.
