These are the dairy noting made by one Sri.Padinjarethil Chettikkandi Velu residing in Kozhikode Corporation, during the Malabar mutiny period. The notes include news items that appeared in the newspapers like Kerala Patrika, West coast Spectator, and Hindu etc. during the period. This is taken from the text copied and sent to Sri P.V.K. Nedungadi by Sri. P. C. Damodaran the grandson of Sri.Velu.
June 11th 1921, Saturday.
Today’s Kerala Patrika says that there are 18007 members in the Khilafat.
August 5th 1921, Friday.
For publishing a news report accusing the police in the Khilafat case at Ottapalam, the editors of “Hindu”,- Kasthuri Iyengar and K.Srinivasan were charged in a defamation suit no: 55 for Rs.10,000/- today by Hr. Hitchcock, Superintendent of Malabar Police – filed in Sub court Kozhikode.
August 13th 1921, Saturday.
In today’s Pathrika it is seen that Eranad people are making swords and other weapons.
August 20th 1921, Saturday.
Today Ernad Moplahs have started their mutiny. Today, the rioters of Thirurangadi have removed rails at Parappanangadi. They have made it impossible to run trains. Shankara Menon walked up to Kadalundy and boarded the train. Damodaran who wanted to go to Palakkad had to return.
August 21st 1921, Sunday.
Today also the train movement was disrupted. The rioters killed Mr. Rowli, Palakkad ASP. Mr. Rowli was a youngster of 22 years of age. Mr. Johnson also was killed. He too was a youngster. Today the mutiny first started at Perintalmanna. They are Moplahs from nearby places.
August 22nd 1921, Monday.
Mutiny started a second time at Perintalmanna by Moplahs of Puthanangadi. Till this evening there were no train trips. One Asst. Superintendent at Palakkad and One Govindan Nair, head constable and Moideen Koya, a constable died in the mutiny. The Collector came last night. Today announcement has been made by “Tom Tom” (beating of drums) prohibiting assembly of more than three people, and walking through the sides of railway lines and travelling by road during nights. Today a large number of white” British” army is coming. Today, a special train with people has gone to repair the rails.
August 23rd 1921, Tuesday.
Today also train movement has not been restored. Records kept at Ponnani Post office, Tirur Magistrate court and Munsiff court have been destroyed and Parappanangadi Munsiff court and Post office have been ransacked. The rioters had entered the Nilambur Kovilakam and Kizhakke Kovilakam at Kottakkal . 13 people died in Nilambur.
August 24th 1921, Wednesday.
The army coming by ship has not reached till evening 6’o clock. Mail letters from Madras were brought via Nilagiri in truck.
August 25th 1921, Thursday.
The army went towards south in 21 cars in the morning. 22 Khilafat people including Kesava Menon have gone to Eranad as agreed to by the Collector to pacify the insurgents. There is news that they were detained at Feroke and later released.
The army has reached. This noon, a ship full of army men arrived- Disembarked by evening- Myself and Sankara Menon had gone to the Port office.
August 26th 1921, Friday.
Today 100 soldiers landed. They marched through Kuttichira, Aluvani Theruvu to Mithayi Theru and returned to ship.
August 28th 1921, Sunday.
Today, a third attack in Perintalmanna took place. Kruvarakkundu Moplahs burned stamps worth Rs.19000/- They took Rs 1900/- worth of currency from the treasury. The Taluk Katcheri was torched. All records of Munsiff court, Sub Magistrate court and other government offices were burned.
August 30th 1921, Tuesday.
Today a rumor spread that the Khilafat advocate Madhavan Nair has committed suicide.
September 1st 1921, Thursday.
Ali Musalyar who is said to have ancestors who “did not die lying in a mat” (The usage is about brave fighters who die in wars only) and 41 of his men were reportedly caught.
September 12th 1921, Monday.
The police caught two Moplahs who confirmed to Olavanna village officer that they smashed the bridges. It is learned that they were released on the surety of the Village Officer himself.
September 15th 1921, Thursday.
Drunkards created mayhem in Feroke. The army went there thinking that it was created by the Moplah rebels and returned immediately. The government issued strict orders that Khilaft leaders like Kesava Menon, Madhavan Nair, Gopala Menon, Hasan Koya etc. should not leave the municipality.
September 16th 1921, Friday.
Moulana Muhammad Ali and Gandhiji started from Calcutta on 13th. On 14th at Visakhapatnam Muhamadali was caught as per warrant from District Magistrate and kept in custody with an order to release him against good conduct. Gandhiji and wife reached Madras yesterday, 15th. (Saw in today’s Hindu) Malappuram Kunjithangal died in Kannur prison.( News from Spectator daily)
September 22nd and 23rd 1921, Thursday and Friday.
The judges for the military court have reached on 22nd. On 23rd, Military court opened in Collectorate.
October 16th 1921, Sunday.
Hearing a rumor that the Moplah rioters are reaching here, people have started moving in groups.
October 17th 1921, Monday.
A crowd of people travelled westwards up to Muryad and eastwards up to Mathara and returned by one in the midnight
October 19th 1921, Wednesday.
Panniyankara people caught the goods belonging to the insurgents.
October 22nd 1921, Saturday.
The army moved towards Kunnamangalam and returned by evening six. They had gone hearing that the rioters had crossed the jetty with arms. Sub Inspector Thattan Kelappan had exaggerated the fake news. Nothing of the sort had happened there. It is heard that the Inspector was immediately suspended.
October 28th 1921, Friday.
The army has gone to Kundamangalam and Feroke.
October 29th 1921, Saturday.
In today’s Kerala Patrika, it was seen written that Moplahs should be compelled to live in Hindu areas.
November 9th 1921, Friday.
The insurgents have entered Mannur at 6.30 in the morning.
November 21st 1921, Wednesday.
The court has today decreed that Ali Musalyar and other 13 people be hanged till death and the rest of 25 people to be deported and all their property confiscated. The accused bearing numbers 8, 11 and 14 being minors, their case be referred to the government.
February 18th 1922, Saturday.
Ali Musalyar, Assan Kutty, and Ahamad were hanged to death at Coimbatore jail.
